4 Scriptures on Creativity & Calling

I keep a file on my computer of scriptures on calling, creativity, and work. These verses remind me of who I am in Christ and the beautiful work He has invited me into with Him. On days when I’ve lost my way, wrestle with discouragement, or find the voices of others too loud in my head, these truths draw me back to a solid foundation and refresh my soul.

We co-collaborate with God, the master Creator! We see His work around us every day. In fact, we are His best work, made in His image. 

When we engage our creative gifts, it brings us joy.

When we engage our creative gifts, it delights God.

When we engage our creative gifts, we point others to beauty and truth.

Yet, little of that happens when we are worn down, discouraged, distracted, or lost.

Soak in these truths today and anchor yourself in the beauty, purpose, and joy of God’s design for you.

Which truth do you need to dwell on today?

You are God’s Poem.

"For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10 ESV

The Greek word for “workmanship” is poeima - poetry. We are living, breathing pieces of art crafted by God. He made us in His image and designed us on purpose with purpose. And He did all of this “beforehand,” which shows a depth of insight, planning, and foresight. 

Today, we get to walk with Him and enjoy both His presence and the work He has laid before us. You and I, in a very real sense, are poetry in motion, made for His glory.

He guides our work.

"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands." Psalm 90:17 ESV

The creative life can be lonely, yet God invites us into a relationship with Him. By His Spirit, He dwells in us and empowers us to live, move, and have our being. This includes our creative work! As we write, paint, dance, and sculpt, let His beauty shine forth through us. 

We don’t have to go it alone. Instead, He establishes our work and equips us. Amen.

All of it counts.

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17 ESV

I am a writer even when I am not writing. I am a photographer, though my camera has sat on a shelf for far too long. Life is lived in between each creative pursuit. When I am not writing or taking pictures, my schedule is full. What does yours look like?

Our creative design and calling are not confined to one category or activity. They encompass every aspect of our lives. From relationships to problem-solving, creativity enlivens the way we think, make decisions, and love others. 

Our calling is not one role or responsibility, it is a lifetime of following Christ in all things. 

You reflect his beauty.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation, the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come." 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

We live in a beautiful tension of being made new and waiting for full restoration. Until then, we display the glorious good news of the hope of Christ in our lives. The new has come and is coming.

What old ways of thinking and living still cling to you? Embrace the gift of new life in your daily life, your relationships, your creative endeavors, your work, and your rest. There is great hope in leaning into the reality that you have been made new.
